Exponents are often introduced as a way of multiplying several of the same value. Two or more numbers are needed for multiplication and rules are developed based on this assumption. Exponents that are equal to 0, or 1, or negative, or fractions do not fit this assumption yet the rules are just assumed to apply to them as well. These notes explain what exponents mean for the values mentioned, and then prove why the rules do apply to them.
