Crisis
Mathematics education in South Africa is in serious trouble. If you are not aware of the extent of the problem please have a look at some of the following links.
History
I am very concerned about the poor quality of mathematics teaching in South Africa in general and in my community in particular. My realisation of the problem has increased through my interactions with the many students I tutor and have tutored in my community over the years. I have reached the point where I feel I need to become more actively involved in addressing the problem.
As a result, I have started this project to offer free online lessons to groups of students and to share notes I have written for my students over the years .
For more than 2 years I have offered free online lessons to schools in my area but principals have shown a disappointing lack of interest in it. In one instance a principal reprimanded a teacher for telling students about the help I am offering. I am therefore offering this help directly to students. However, my offer to schools remains open.
Initial focus
The lessons will initially be aimed at high school students, but topics for primary school students will be added as the need is identified and extra teachers join the project . Please complete the short questionnaire to help establish what help is needed.
Teachers needed
If you are a teacher and would like to help with this project, or if you are part of an organisation to whom I can offer my services, please click here.
